## Overview

The WIA Museum Digital Archive Standard (WIA-EDU-024) is a comprehensive specification for digitizing, managing, and sharing museum collections worldwide. This standard enables cultural institutions to preserve heritage, democratize access, and create engaging educational experiences through digital technologies.

## Key Features

- 🗄️ **Collection Management**: Comprehensive digital cataloging with rich metadata and provenance tracking
- 📸 **High-Resolution Imaging**: IIIF-compliant ultra-high-resolution image delivery with deep zoom
- 🎨 **Online Exhibitions**: Create immersive virtual exhibitions with storytelling and interactive elements
- 🔍 **Advanced Search**: Powerful search with faceted filtering and AI-powered recommendations
- 🌐 **Public APIs**: RESTful APIs for researchers, developers, and cultural heritage aggregators
- 📚 **Educational Programs**: Interactive learning modules and curriculum-aligned content
- 🔐 **Access Control**: Granular permissions and cultural heritage protection compliance
- 🔗 **Linked Data**: Semantic web integration with schema.org and cultural heritage ontologies

## Quick Start

### For Museum Administrators

1. **Assess your collection**:
   - Total objects
   - Objects with digital records
   - Objects with images
   - Current systems in use

2. **Choose implementation path**:
   - Cloud-hosted solution (fastest, $50-500/month)
   - Self-hosted open source (most flexible)
   - Commercial platform (enterprise)
   - Hybrid approach (existing systems)

3. **Get started**:
   ```bash
   # Try the interactive simulator
   open simulator/index.html
   # Read the implementation guide
   open spec/implementation.md
   ```

### For Developers

Install the TypeScript SDK:

```bash
npm install @wia/museum-digital-archive-sdk
```

Basic usage:

```typescript
import { MuseumArchiveClient } from '@wia/museum-digital-archive-sdk';
const client = new MuseumArchiveClient({
  baseURL: 'https://api.museum.org/v1',
  apiKey: 'your-api-key'
});
// Get object details
const object = await client.objects.get('2025.123.45');
// Search collection
const results = await client.objects.search({
  query: 'impressionist landscape',
  filters: { department: 'European Paintings' }
});
// Get IIIF manifest
const manifest = await client.iiif.getManifest('2025.123.45');
```

## Architecture

The standard consists of four integrated layers:
