A guide to the WIA-SPACE-011 standard
The Moon is the only celestial body beyond Earth on which humans have set foot. Ever since the Soviet Union's Luna 2 became the first spacecraft to reach the lunar surface in 1959, the Moon has been a central goal of humanity's expansion into space.
On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy declared the goal of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth before this decade is out." This was the beginning of the Apollo Program.
