"Benefit All Humanity"
This chapter covers the essential aspects of RESTful API design for robot control and fleet management.
The API interface defines how applications, fleet managers, and control systems interact with delivery robots. This chapter specifies the RESTful API design, endpoint structure, authentication methods, and data exchange protocols required for ROB-010 compliance.
RESTful API design principles prioritize simplicity, statelessness, and scalability. The ROB-010 API uses HTTP methods semantically (GET for retrieval, POST for creation, PUT for updates, DELETE for removal), employs JSON for data exchange, implements OAuth 2.0 for authentication, and follows OpenAPI 3.0 specification for documentation. Rate limiting, pagination, and error handling are standardized.
HTTP methods are used semantically: GET /robots/{id} retrieves robot state, POST /robots creates a new robot registration, PUT /robots/{id} updates robot information, DELETE /robots/{id} deregisters a robot. GET /deliveries lists deliveries, POST /deliveries creates a new delivery task, GET /deliveries/{id} retrieves delivery details, PUT /deliveries/{id}/status updates delivery status. All responses include HTTP status codes, error messages, and pagination headers.
| Method | Use Case | Authentication |
|---|---|---|
| GET | Retrieve data | API key or OAuth |
| POST | Create resource | OAuth 2.0 |
| PUT | Update resource | OAuth 2.0 |
| DELETE | Remove resource | OAuth 2.0 + Admin |
The Robot Control API provides endpoints for managing robot operations: POST /robots/{id}/commands/start initiates autonomous navigation, POST /robots/{id}/commands/stop halts the robot, POST /robots/{id}/commands/pause temporarily pauses navigation, PUT /robots/{id}/mode changes operation mode (autonomous/manual/idle), GET /robots/{id}/status retrieves current operational status, POST /robots/{id}/emergency_stop triggers immediate emergency halt. All commands require authentication and return command_id for tracking execution.
API responses follow a consistent format: HTTP status code (200 OK, 201 Created, 400 Bad Request, 401 Unauthorized, 404 Not Found, 500 Server Error), response body in JSON with "status", "data", "message", and "timestamp" fields, error details including "error_code", "error_message", and "details", pagination metadata ("page", "per_page", "total_pages", "total_count"), and request tracking via "request_id". This consistency enables robust error handling and debugging.
Package Management API provides complete package lifecycle control: POST /packages creates a new delivery task with pickup and dropoff locations, GET /packages lists all packages with filtering (status, date, robot), GET /packages/{id} retrieves detailed package information, PUT /packages/{id}/assign assigns package to a specific robot, PUT /packages/{id}/status updates status (picked_up, in_transit, delivered, failed), DELETE /packages/{id} cancels a delivery (only if not yet picked up), GET /packages/{id}/tracking provides customer-facing tracking information.
Authentication and security are critical for API protection. Implement OAuth 2.0 with separate scopes for different operations: 'robot:read' for status queries, 'robot:control' for operational commands, 'package:read' for delivery information, 'package:write' for package creation, 'fleet:admin' for fleet management. Use HTTPS (TLS 1.3) for all communication. Implement rate limiting (e.g., 1000 requests/hour per API key). Log all API access for audit trails. Validate inputs to prevent injection attacks. Use API keys for service-to-service, OAuth for user-facing apps.
